Friday May 7, 1943

Today my fourth lesson was completed much to my satisfaction. I started out by taking off and clearing myself of airport traffic. This is done by climbing straight to 400 feet then you make a 90 degree turn to the left and climb to 500 feet then you make a 45 degree turn to the right and you are out of traffic. I then proceeded to my flying area and picked out a field to fly around. I flew around the field and then went into S turns over a road as I finished my last turn I went right into figure eights and then a parachute eight (it looks like this - ∞ while a fig eight is this - 8). Next I did 90 degree turns 30 degree bank, 180 degree turns 45 degree bank, 360 degree turns 60 degree banks. From these I went into climbing turns until I got to 2,000 ft. About this time I went through a small light cloud. It was like going through smoke from a train. At this height I did some more turns and then did some power stalls. I pulled the nose up until the plane couldn't climb any more. It hangs in the air for just a moment and then I push the stick forward and go into a dive and then pull up into another stall. I did this 5 or 6 times and then started back to the field. On the way I did coordination exercises which consist of waving the wings up and down while kicking the rudder pedals at the same time. Oh yes, I forgot the forced landing and slips. My inst. took over and headed for a field then he had me make a slip to the right and left. This consists of turning sideways and lowering one wing which causes you to fall sideways and lose altitude quickly. Well, we came down to the field and he told me to land it. Well I went on down and then I pulled the nose to stall it but just then he opened the throttle and gave it the gun. Well we came around to the field to land and I brought it in but I could feel him on the controls as we reached the ground. Other than the landing, I did practically all the flying. The inst. sits in front of me and writes in a book when I do the maneuvers.

In first aid today we progressed to bandages and tourniquets. In PT today I ran two miles without stopping. I got a letter from you and Autie Burnice today. We've been so busy this last week that I haven't had time to do anything. I have one study period a day and that isn't much. This latitude effects all us northern boys by making us fall asleep in classes. I'm getting used to it now, so I don't have much trouble in that line anymore. You asked if I took American History in High School. You should know I did. Didn't I stay up all night getting an outline finished once? We had a history test today and I have been in class 2 days this week so I don't think I did so well. I only made a 94 on my last test. I have a test in CAR tomorrow morning so I better close this for now and say good night.
