April 23 Friday

Another week has passed and so my test day is over. Every Friday we have a test in every subject, so I call Friday my test day. We aren't going to have school on Sat. any more that's one good thing. I don't know what we'll do on Sat. but I imagine they can find something for us to do. There's going to be a high school track meet here tomorrow so I imagine I'll go see it. Yesterday the army pulled another one of it surprises. Oh, if you ever join the army the first thing you'll learn is never be surprised whatever happens, for nothing is logical. We fell in at 3:30 and instead of having drill we were marched to town and ushered into the show. Well, the lights went out and on came a news reel that lasted 15 minutes, then we saw a comedy that lasted for 10 minutes. After that we came back home. When we got back we fell out for P.T. and they told us were were going on a 2 mile road run. Well, we ran a mile out on a dirt road and then rested for ten minutes and then ran back. I only got about half way back so the rest of the way I had to walk. I got winded too easy. Today in P.T. I played volley ball so that wasn't so bad. We get clean sheets every week and instead of just one clean one like we did at Sheppard Field we get two clean ones and a pillow case. But here's the screwy part, instead of getting clean sheets we get new sheets that have never been used before. This has happened three times so far. I wonder how long it will last. We finished GI at 8:30 tonight so I had a chance to write this letter. I could use some iodine and band-aids but I don't want a first aid kit. It's too big to put in my barracks bag. I could use a laundry bag if its the same color as my barracks bag. They are a canvas color or some have a slight green coloring in them. I got the soap and candy bar today. I was just about out of soap, too. Maybe you better not send me any more gum. You know how I chew it and if we get caught chewing gum in ranks we get gigs. I gave a piece to a guy that marches next to me and three minutes later he got caught. Another boy and me are going to try to get out to the canyon on Sunday. They say it's very nice and colorful. I guess we'll start walking and hope to get a ride. I got two letters from you today and one form Doris. I think we'll change to khaki next week. It's getting pretty warm here. My sore throat is gone and I don't have a cold. You asked why I write to Em, well the only way I can find out about Robin is to ask here so she sends me all the news about him. I write to S. Wallace simply because she wrote me. She goes to school at Iowa State. I never wrote Ann because I didn't know her address. You asked about Dolores, who is she? Doris Chidlow is her name and her father is a doctor at the Elmhurst Hospital.

Well, I guess that answers all your questions so I'll say goodnight.

Love, Rae
