April 30 Friday

Say, I got a letter today saying you didn't get a letter in three days. How come? I wrote last Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Didn't you get them? Yesterday we had our two mile run and I still didn't make it, so I guess I'll have to run it every day on my own time. You said something about physical training, well the air corps has two different courses. One is for maintenance or base men and the other is for combat men. Naturally the combat men get the more extensive training and building up. You said something about food. Well, at a large field like Sheppard Field or any other field of its size there is plenty of food. The only trouble is that there are so many to feed the cooks don't have time to fix a nice meal. They just manage to get the food cooked and that's all. No flavoring or care. The hash is usually too sloppy and then they try to have ration days where they just serve rice or spaghetti or noodles. The food isn't very tasty. Here, where there are only 400 of us, and since we've been on army rations the food has been very good. We get about a quart and half of milk a day and all you can eat. This school has an agriculture farm and all of our milk comes from there. It's pasteurized and it sure tastes good. Oh yes, since I've been in the army there is nothing that I don't eat, absolutely nothing. We GI'd tonight and also got clean sheets. This time they weren't new ones. We got new mattresses today. Our old ones were narrow ones that fit cots while our new ones fit our beds. They're about six inches wider and two thicker. We start flying Monday for sure. That means we don't go to classes any more. I don't know when we will ship. The middle of May or maybe sooner. Oh yes, I have a date for Sunday afternoon. I took a chance and asked my telephone operator. I suppose she'll be a bag but if she is I can watch the show. We start wearing khakis tomorrow morning by standing inspection at 8:00. We get paid at 13:00 and then we are free for the week end.

Sat. morning

Well, we stood inspection this morning at 08:00 in our khakies. Mine fit alright except around the waist. At 09:00 we went to the auditorium and the C.O. talked to us about all sorts of things - special notices - coupon books -study halls and XXX. He did drop a hint that the first flights (there are two) might leave soon. After he finished talking we had to go to classes. The physics class is the only one that meets so I am in this study period until 11:50. I sure do like my XXX suit only I'm afraid it will get dirty easily. Oh yes the Lt. said our barracks (dining room) was very good. We have to keep our shoes shined so you can see the clouds in them at all times. Now that we wear khakies we have to wear our tan colored sox at all times. Well, I guess that's all the news for now so I'll close.

Love, Rae

P.S. Are you over your cold as yet?

P.P.S. Give Aunt Elsie my love, too. I can't find time to write to everyone I should write to.
